Phil Merlino

Artist STATEMENT

My photography explores the beauty and quiet drama of the Adirondacks, where light, weather, and water continually transform the landscape. Through my most recent images of the Saranac River as I demonstrate here, I seek to capture its movement, reflections, and subtle details, inviting viewers to pause, look closer, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Artist Bio

Phil Merlino is an Adirondack Mountain photographer specializing in landscape and nature photography. Born in New York City, he has been a full-time resident of North Hudson, New York, in the Adirondack Park for the past fifteen years, with a connection to the region spanning more than fifty years.

His interest in art was influenced by his father, an oil painter who loved landscapes and wildlife. Phil’s own passion for photography began while living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and has remained a central part of his life ever since. After a career as a teacher and Division I basketball coach, he devoted himself to exploring and photographing the natural world.

An Adirondack 46er and avid fisherman, Phil finds inspiration in the region’s mountains, rivers, lakes, wildlife, and changing seasons. His photographs emphasize the interplay of light, weather, reflections, and the often-overlooked details that reveal the character of the Adirondack landscape.

Phil’s work has been featured in regional exhibitions, including "The Adirondacks Up Close" at Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls, New York. Through his photography, he hopes to encourage a deeper appreciation for the beauty and preservation of the natural world.
